SQF: Why did you start this magazine?
NS: As writers and editors, we thought it would be fun, and it has been.
SQF: What are the top three things you look for in a submission and why?
NS: In non-fiction we look for ideas that are explained clearly and logically. It’s harder to answer regarding creative work, since our tastes vary, and since we don’t limit ourselves to a certain style of fiction or poetry.
SQF: What most often turns you off to a submission?
NS: In non-fiction pieces: when there is no thesis. In creative work: when there’s nothing at least mildly provocative, in terms of plot or voice or mood, on the first page.
SQF: Do you provide comments when you reject a submission?
NS: If we like something about the piece, we might suggest general edits or ask if the author has another submission.
SQF: What magazines do you read?
NS: The New Yorker, Harper’s.
